Many city dwellers fleeing America’s cities for the beaches and mountains
this summer are finding that the air pollution is as bad as at home. A report
from the Clean Air Network and Task Force in Washington DC, says that favourite
getaways such as Cape Cod and the Great Smoky Mountains are badly affected by
ozone-forming smog from coal-fired power plants, four-wheel-drive recreational
vehicles and large trucks. The Environmental Protection Agency wants to tighten
emission standards for these vehicles, but it will take at least five years for
these measures to come into force.
