Sony is planning to release a personal stereo that downloads copy-protected
music from the Internet. The electronics giant, which also publishes music,
hopes the secret electronic format it is planning for the system will combat Net
music piracy. The device, provisionally called the Netman, is based on the
Memory Stick, a flash memory storage device for digital cameras. Music would be
downloaded from the Internet onto these cards, the size of a pencil battery,
which would then be used in the Netman instead of audio tapes.
