Top of the list for every Web surfer’s stocking next Christmas will be an
ultra high-speed modem. A consortium of computer and telecommunications
companies have decided to back a plan to produce modems that work at speeds of
1.8 megabits per second. The modems are due to go on sale before the end of the
year. The members of the consortium include Microsoft, Intel, Compaq, Sprint and
GTE.
