A highly sensitive charge-coupled device (CCD) that normally studies heavenly
bodies is being adapted to spot tumours. The CCD, developed at Louisiana State
University, can measure the energy of individual X-ray photons and help pinpoint
the source of gamma ray bursts. Now the scientists are working on the CCD’s
hardware and software to improve the quality of mammograms and doctors’ ability
to spot breast tumours.
