Rachel Carson’s classic The Sea Around Us (Oxford University Press,
£7.99, ISBN 0 19 506997 8), written in the 1950s, is brought up to date
with a new chapter on marine ecology. It remains one of the high-water marks in
popular science writing. A new, and more ecologically aware, generation will
still find much to enjoy in her effortless and enchanting prose.
