ONE of the on-going debates in Australia is the issue of how many people the
continent can house. CSIRO scientist Doug Cocks set the scene last year
with his book People Policy. Now the Department of Immigration and
Multicultural Affairs has produced two slim volumes outlining trends in
population growth and some of the main issues behind the debate. The booklets,
Understanding Australia’s Population by Lynne Williams and
Fiona McKenzie and Understanding Australia’s Population Debate by
Ian Lowe, are ideal for school use. They are available for $5.95 each
from Commonwealth bookshops in capital cities or by calling the department in
Canberra on 06 264 3780.
