The title The Kondo Problem to Heavy Fermions (Cambridge University Press, £50/$89.95 ISBN 0 521 36382 9) hardly sets the pulses racing – and won’t win any prizes for grammar. But high temperature superconductivity is a bit more exciting. A.C. Hewson’s book about magnetic impurities in metals covers work done from the 1950s up to the late 1980s, when its application to superconductivity suddenly became so important. In addition, the mathematical formalism of many-body techniques should be of interest to a slightly broader audience.
