Geoffrey Robinson, chief scientist at the Department of Trade and Industry,
has resigned with more than three years of his contract still to run. The
DTI is now considering abolishing the post. Robinson gave no reason for
his resignation. He joined the DTI in June 1992 when hopes were high that
research spending would rise. Since then, the DTI has cut back or abandoned
a number of research programmes.
