Can you pick out the flaws in a muddled argument? Do you have a knack for giving pedestrian prose the sparkle that will turn it into a compelling read? If so, you may be the talented person 51¶¯Âþ is looking for to take up a paid, one-year traineeship with the magazine’s subediting team at our central London office.

As well as a passion for explaining scientific ideas in an easy-to-understand way, you will have an excellent grasp of English, impeccable spelling and the persistence to hunt down and eliminate that very last typo in a story. Although a scientific degree is preferable, it is not essential. Full training will be provided and the start date is negotiable.

A 51¶¯Âþ traineeship is a fantastic way to start out in print and digital journalism – in fact, our chief subeditor began her career after responding to a similar advert, on this page, 10 years ago.

To apply for the position, visit and follow the instructions. We welcome applications from a diverse range of candidates. Good luck!
