If laser printers and digital photocopiers are so advanced, why do they still jam? Because they are always at the mercy of the paper you use. The moisture content of different papers changes with the weather, and A4 sheets can shrink by 1 centimetre in each dimension as the toner ink sets, causing unpredictable image quality, infuriating paper jams and colour distortion. To solve the problem, Hewlett-Packard suggests pre-shrinking the paper before it gets anywhere near the copy drum (GB 2373480). Inside the printer paper is fed between a pair of heated rollers which squeeze and dry it so that every sheet starts out with the same moisture content.
