GLOBAL warming is bringing new arrivals to British shores. Since 1980, 18 new fish species have been caught off the Cornwall coast, as species from farther south move in as the water warms up. From 1960 to 1980, however, no new species were recorded (Journal of the Marine Biological Association, vol 82, p 177). 鈥淭here is such a clear signal, quite mind-boggling to see,鈥� says Tony Stebbing of the Plymouth Marine Laboratory, who led the study. Fish are ideal for tracking the effects of global warming because they can travel huge distances, and as cold-blooded animals they have to find suitable surroundings to regulate their temperature.
