The debate over teaching evolution in American schools has entered a new phase. The Ohio Board of Education is considering whether to include the so-called theory of 鈥渋ntelligent design鈥 in its curriculum, though most scientists believe ID is merely creationism dressed up as science. In December, scientists and educators were pleased with draft guidelines which explicitly required schools to teach evolution. But now creationists are suggesting a compromise where students will discuss the 鈥渃ontroversy鈥 surrounding evolution and in the process learn about ID. Such a compromise would give students an erroneous view of the scientific process and real scientific data, says Skip Evans of the National Center for Science Education in Oakland, California. A decision is expected later in the summer.
