TONGUE studs can ruin your teeth and gums, a study of 52 young wearers has found. 鈥淭he longer you have it, the greater the likelihood of complications,鈥� says Dimitris Tatakis, professor of periodontology at Ohio State University. Almost half the subjects who had worn a barbell-shaped stud for more than four years had chipped teeth, and 35 per cent had receding gums (Journal of Periodontology, vol 73, p 289). 鈥淚t鈥檚 caused by the stud banging against the gum,鈥� says Tatakis.
