Bike lights are not always enough to get cyclists noticed at night, so making
your whole bike glow could help. Chris Niezrecki at the University of Florida in
Gainesville has taken strips of electroluminescent polymer, which glows brightly
when a current passes through it, and stuck them to the frame tubes and wheel
rims of a bike. Three 9-volt batteries power the strips to give 10 hours of
continuous light. 鈥淚t鈥檚 pretty bright at night, and if you make them blink they
last three times as long,鈥 he says. Niezrecki is now looking to license the
idea. A bike-glow kit should cost around $70, he says.
