The Coca-Cola company, one of the world’s largest users of refrigeration,
aims to phase out hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) from all its new equipment by 2004
to reduce their impact on global warming. HFCs are thousands of times better
than CO₂ at trapping heat in the atmosphere, and are included in the
provisions of the Kyoto Protocol. Coca-Cola’s decision is expected to spark a
move towards more environmentally benign alternatives throughout the
refrigeration industry.
