In 1984, the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco cleaned its tanks and dumped the
water in the Mediterranean. It contained a vigorous, toxic seaweed that nobody
expected to survive in the open water. Alexandre Meinesz, the author of
Killer Algae, thought otherwise and said so—to deaf ears. Now the
weed covers 4000 hectares of the Mediterranean coastline. A calamity. Published
