Samsung of Korea plans to use a new kind of antishake stabiliser in its video
cameras (EP 909 087). Camcorders usually have the lens optics mounted on springs
or in fluid to compensate for any vibrations. Samsung thinks magnetism is
better. A mirror mounted between the lens and imaging chip is steadied by a
magnetic field, which works like a friction-free bearing. A velocity sensor
detects hand tremor and generates an electric current that varies the magnetic
field holding the mirror. So if the camera moves, the mirror moves smoothly in
the opposite direction, keeping the image steady.
