William Burroughs knows his atmospheric physics and his hills. He combines his knowledge in Mountain Weather: A Guide for Skiers and Hillwalkers (Crowood Press, Marlborough, Wiltshire, £10.99 pbk, ISBN 85223 877 1). As he says mountains usually have more of everything – more weather, more changes, more extremes, so it makes sense to study conditions and watch the forecasts before heading for the hills. Nice diagrams throughout showing, for example, how winds scour slopes, gain energy and dump snow.
