The charms of extended definition television (EDTV) were displayed this
week in video footage of artists, Peter Cocks and Stephen Taylor Woodrow,
painting a three-dimensional cubist portrait. The video was replayed to
delegates at the International Television Symposium in Montreux, on an extra
wide 38-inch television. EDTV improves picture quality by updating every
line of the screen 50 times a second. A normal TV updates alternate lines
on each vertical scan, so each line is updated only 25 times a second, causing
slight flickering. EDTV is coarser than high definition television, but
the technology, developed by National Trans communications of Winchester,
is available now. However, today’s televisions receive neither EDTV nor
HDTV.
