MALARIA and a silted river led the people of Paestum to abandon their
city in Southern Italy. John Griffiths Pedley, who has directed excavations
there, recounts the rise and decay of one ot the best- preserved classical
cities in Paestum (Thames & Hudson, pp 184, Pounds 20). Its rediscovery
in the century prompted a new theory of the history of architecture, that
Roman forms sprang from the Greek.
