Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Bangkok and meet the group

Arrive in Bangkok and transfer to your hotel. While Thailand’s capital is often associated with its temples, markets and busy streets, this tour focuses on a different side of the city – one shaped by community life, urban green spaces and local culture.

This evening, gather with your fellow travellers for a welcome dinner featuring seasonal Thai cuisine and an introduction to the journey ahead.

Day 2: Green Bangkok – Visit Dusit Central Park, Benjakitti Forest Park and Queen Sirikit Park

This morning, discover how Bangkok is reimagining itself through innovative urban planning and green infrastructure designed to create a more sustainable future. Begin at Dusit Central Park, an ambitious redevelopment that integrates public green space, biodiversity and modern city living in the heart of the capital. Continue to Benjakitti Forest Park, where a former industrial site has been transformed into a network of wetlands, walking trails and wildlife habitats that help mitigate flooding while supporting an impressive diversity of plants and birds.

Later, explore the tranquil Queen Sirikit Park, a living botanical collection showcasing Thailand’s rich plant diversity through its arboretum, lotus ponds and beautifully landscaped gardens. Along the way, stop to enjoy coffee at a local café before returning to your hotel. The afternoon is free to relax or continue exploring Bangkok at your own pace.

Day 3: Morning exploration of Bangkok’s ‘green lung’ and afternoon bicycle tour

This morning, cross the Chao Phraya River by local ferry to Bang Krachao, a remarkable pocket of protected green space that offers an insight into how nature can flourish alongside one of Asia’s largest cities. Often referred to as Bangkok’s “green lung”, this riverine landscape has been safeguarded from large-scale development, creating an important refuge for wildlife and a natural buffer that helps regulate the city’s environment.

Explore Bang Krachao by bicycle, following elevated paths through mangrove habitats, orchards, coconut plantations and traditional villages. Along the way, learn how local communities are preserving both biodiversity and cultural heritage through sustainable farming, conservation projects and traditional crafts. After visiting community initiatives and local markets, enjoy a lunch showcasing fresh regional produce before returning to Bangkok.

You will have another talk this evening.

Day 4: Amphawa floating market and Suan Sampran Organic Village

Depart Bangkok this morning at around 06:30 for the canals of Amphawa, where one of Thailand’s best-known floating markets offers a fascinating window into traditional riverside life. Set along a network of waterways lined with wooden houses, the market remains an important hub for local communities, with vendors selling fresh produce, seafood and handmade goods directly from their boats. As you explore, gain insight into the enduring relationship between Thailand’s canal networks, trade and daily life.

Continue to Suan Sampran Organic Village in Nakhon Pathom Province, an award-winning centre dedicated to sustainable agriculture, biodiversity and traditional Thai knowledge. After a wholesome lunch at the RXV Kitchen, prepared using seasonal organic ingredients, take part in a selection of hands-on workshops led by local artisans and producers. These seasonal experiences showcase traditional crafts, organic farming practices and the cultural heritage that underpins Thailand’s sustainable way of life, offering an engaging insight into the connections between people, food and the environment.

Day 5: Thai cooking experience and Bangkok to Chiang Mai by sleeper train

Discover the science and culture behind one of the world’s most celebrated cuisines during a hands-on Thai cooking experience. Begin with a visit to a local market, where you’ll learn how fresh herbs, spices and seasonal ingredients combine to create the distinctive balance of flavours that characterises Thai cooking. Guided by an expert chef, prepare a selection of classic dishes, from aromatic curry pastes and fragrant mains to traditional desserts, while gaining insight into the culinary traditions and regional influences that have shaped Thailand’s food culture.

Later, enjoy access to a day room at a local hotel, where you can relax, take a swim or freshen up before boarding your overnight sleeper train for the journey north.

Travel information: During the overnight train you will be travelling in soft sleeper class. Multishare compartments, air-conditioning, bunk beds, sheets and a pillow are provided. A curtain is installed at every berth which can offer privacy and more importantly, block the light that can interfere with sleep because the central lights are kept on through the night. Plug socket and reading light are available for every berth so passengers can charge their phone and laptop or read throughout their train ride. We recommend you bring a sleep mask and ear plugs if you are a light sleeper. There’s also a food and drink service on board. Note that your baggage will travel in the carriage with you.

Day 6: Arrival in Chiang Mai, afternoon city tour

Arrive in Chiang Mai, the historic capital of the Lanna Kingdom and the cultural heart of northern Thailand. After checking in, enjoy a free morning before setting out this afternoon to explore the city’s remarkable heritage. Begin at Wat Phra Singh, one of the finest surviving examples of Lanna temple architecture, renowned for its elegant design and revered Buddha images. Continue through the atmospheric streets of the old city to Wat Chedi Luang, whose monumental 15th-century stupa remains one of northern Thailand’s most impressive archaeological landmarks and once housed the Emerald Buddha.

Along the way, pause for coffee at Kha Ama Coffee, an inspiring social enterprise that works closely with Akha hill tribe communities to promote sustainable coffee cultivation while supporting local livelihoods. This provides an opportunity to learn about the environmental and social impact of highland agriculture in northern Thailand. End the day at Chiang Mai’s vibrant night market, where local crafts, regional specialities and street food offer an authentic introduction to the city’s rich cultural traditions.

Day 7: Wat Suan Dok and forest temple of Wat Umong

This morning, gain a deeper understanding of Thai Buddhism during a visit to Wat Suan Dok, where you will have the opportunity to take part in a Monk Chat. These informal conversations provide a unique chance to discuss Buddhist philosophy, daily monastic life and the role of temples in contemporary Thai society. You will also have the opportunity to offer a Sangkhatan (traditional alms set), an important act of merit-making in Theravada Buddhism.

Continue to the tranquil forest temple of Wat Umong, founded in the 14th century and renowned for its ancient brick meditation tunnels and peaceful woodland setting. As you explore the shaded grounds, discover how the natural environment has long played a role in Buddhist contemplative practice. Later, visit Baan Kang Wat, a creative community showcasing the work of local artisans, before concluding the day with an exploration of Ton Payom Market, where fresh produce and regional specialities offer an insight into the flavours and traditions of northern Thai cuisine. Return to your hotel in the late afternoon, with the remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 8: Doi Inthanon National Park

Today, journey into Doi Inthanon National Park, home to Thailand’s highest peak and one of the country’s most important centres of biodiversity. Rising to 2,565 metres, the mountain supports a remarkable range of habitats, from evergreen cloud forest to montane ecosystems, making it a vital refuge for many rare plants and birds.

Accompanied by a local Karen guide, follow the Pha Dok Siew Nature Trail, a community-managed route that showcases the close relationship between people and the forest. The trail covers approximately 2.6 km (1.6 miles) and takes around 2–2½ hours to complete at a leisurely pace. Although there is an overall descent of around 400 metres from the park road to the valley below, the route is considered easy to moderate, following well-maintained paths and steps with a few steeper sections near the waterfall. Passing through cloud forest, alongside waterfalls, terraced rice fields and rich woodland, you’ll learn how generations of Karen communities have sustainably managed this landscape while preserving traditional ecological knowledge. The walk concludes in Ban Mae Klang Luang, where you can enjoy locally grown coffee before returning to Chiang Mai.

This evening, enjoy a farm-to-table dinner prepared with seasonal ingredients sourced from local producers, offering an opportunity to explore how agriculture, biodiversity and regional food traditions have shaped the culture and landscapes of northern Thailand.

Day 9: Tak bat observation, visit the Baan Rai Gong Khing Community and farewell dinner

Begin the day by observing the centuries-old tradition of tak bat (alms giving), as Buddhist monks make their early morning rounds through Chiang Mai. This quiet ritual offers a meaningful insight into Theravada Buddhism and the reciprocal relationship between monastic communities and the wider society, which has remained at the heart of Thai culture for generations.

Later, visit the Baan Rai Gong Khing Community, where sustainable agriculture, traditional crafts and community-led tourism combine to preserve northern Thailand’s cultural heritage. Explore the surrounding countryside by bicycle, cycling through peaceful rural landscapes and a picturesque tree-lined avenue before visiting local farms to learn about seasonal food production and rural livelihoods. Take part in hands-on workshops, including traditional glass painting and the preparation of herbal compresses, which draw on generations of local botanical knowledge. Relax with a herbal bath and traditional Thai massage before enjoying a lunch of regional specialities, including the iconic northern Thai dish khao soi.

This evening, round off the day with an exclusive dining experience created by Chef Tu Tu. Showcasing seasonal local ingredients and contemporary interpretations of traditional northern Thai cuisine, the menu celebrates the rich agricultural heritage and culinary innovation that have made Chiang Mai one of Thailand’s leading food destinations.

Day 10: Departure from Chiang Mai

Enjoy a relaxed final morning in Chiang Mai. Depending on departure arrangements, there may be time for a final stroll through a local neighbourhood or a visit to a café before saying farewell to your fellow travellers.

Based in Modena, you will visit the factory lines, engine labs, paint shops and museums of these automobile manufacturers. Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Bologna and transfer to Modena

Welcome to Italy! On arrival at Bologna airport, transfer to Modena and check in to your hotel, the Hotel Canalgrande, for the duration of the tour.

In the evening meet your fellow guests, Tour Manager and Tour Expert for a welcome meeting to go over plan for the next few days exploring the Motor Valley, followed by a welcome dinner together as a group at a local restaurant.

Day 2: Maserati and Ferrari

This morning is dedicated to Maserati, starting at the showroom and factory in Modena, where you will have a tour of the facility including the new engine lab and the innovative robotic paint shop.

After the tour, continue to the spectacular new Enzo Ferrari Museum nearby. Then head out of Modena to the Museo Ferrari in nearby Maranello where the cars are still produced and tested. Where Alfredo, Enzo Ferrari’s father, had his workshop at the beginning of the 20th century, is an exhibition devoted to different Ferrari engines: classic 12-cylinder engines, 8-cylinders and, Formula 1 power units.

Day 3: Lamborghini

Today begin at Lamborghini headquarters in the small town of Sant’Agata Bolognese, where we see the MUDETEC museum and visit the factory and production line where these iconic cars are assembled. In the afternoon continue to the Ferruccio Lamborghini Museum: redesigned by Tonino Lamborghini, son of Ferruccio, the Museum houses a historical collection of the brand’s most important mechanical creations: from just supercars, Lamborghini produce tractors, boat engines, Formula 1 cars, and even the prototype for a helicopter.

Day 4: Umberto Panini Collection and Stanguellini Museum

Today you will visit two important private car collections. Starting with the magnificent Maserati collection at the Umberto Panini Collection. Sample some of the other famous exports of the Emilia region next door – parmesan and prosciutto di Parma – before returning to Modena in the afternoon. The final visit of the day will be to the exquisite Stanguellini Museum, with its remarkable collection of historic racing cars.

Day 5: Pagani and Ducati

While the history of Maserati, Ferrari and Lamborghini is long and storied, this tour’s final carmaker is a new arrival. Argentinian Horacio Pagani, a former chief engineer at Lamborghini and champion of superlight composite materials, founded his own marque in 1992. Pagani specialises in high performance ‘hypercars’ focused on advanced carbon fibre materials. After visiting the Pagani Museum and factory, you will continue to Ducati, just outside Bologna, where you will have a factory tour of this world-famous motorcycle producer. Return to Modena for a final dinner at an excellent local restaurant.

Day 6: Departure

After breafkast, transfer to Bologna airport for your onward travels.

In November 2030, the skies above South Africa will host one of the world’s most extraordinary natural events — a total solar eclipse. Our specially designed tour, based in the greater Johannesburg region, will combine this rare celestial phenomenon with immersive astronomy experiences, superb stargazing and the excitement of discovering one of Africa’s most fascinating destinations.

Accompanied throughout by an expert astronomer, the tour will feature engaging presentations, eclipse preparation sessions and guided observations of the southern night sky. This extended journey through Morocco weaves together cultural discovery with one of nature’s most extraordinary spectacles: the total solar eclipse on 2 August 2027. From the Mediterranean gateway of Tangier to the deep Sahara and the vibrant cities of the interior, this is a carefully paced exploration of landscape, history and science.

Throughout, you stay in premium accommodation and in Tangier enjoy the company of expert guides, including astronomer Dr Stuart Clark, 51��’s Abigail Beall and field archaeologist Dr Eve MacDonald. Their insights bring the experience to life, from the mechanics of eclipses and celestial motion to the wider workings of our universe. As with all 51�� Discovery Tours, the emphasis is not just on seeing, but on understanding.

For the eclipse itself, you travel to an exclusive viewing location set within wide, open landscapes. Here, under carefully chosen conditions, you will witness an exceptional 4 minutes and 49 seconds of totality. As the moon’s shadow sweeps across the land and daylight fades into an uncanny twilight, the sun’s corona becomes visible in striking detail. With expert guidance, this rare alignment is revealed not only as a profound spectacle, but as a powerful demonstration of the dynamics of our solar system.

Beyond the eclipse, the journey unfolds through Morocco’s richly layered cultural landscape. In Fes, you explore one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, with its intricate medina and longstanding artistic traditions. You then continue towards the Sahara desert, staying in a desert camp where Morocco’s most elemental environments reveal how climate and geology shape ways of life.

The route continues via Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate, where architecture and archaeology illuminate centuries of adaptation at the crossroads of trade routes and empires. In the Atlas mountains, you encounter quieter rhythms of life among Berber communities, staying in a secluded mountain retreat surrounded by dramatic scenery.

The tour concludes in Marrakech, where two days allow for a deeper exploration of this dynamic city. Its palaces, gardens and historic quarters offer insight into a long tradition of ingenuity and design, where observation and practical knowledge have shaped daily life over centuries.

Together, these experiences create a journey that connects Morocco’s human stories with the wider patterns of the natural world and includes a shared moment beneath one of the most remarkable astronomical events of our time.

Day 1: Arrival in Tangier

Upon arrival at the airport in Tangier, you will be met and transferred to the Hotel Idou Malabata, allowing you to settle into your suite and unwind after your journey. In the evening, gather for a welcome dinner with the 51�� host, a convivial occasion to meet fellow travelers and begin your journey together. Set in a warm and inviting atmosphere, it is the perfect introduction to Moroccan hospitality and cuisine.

Day 2: Explore Tangier

Your day in Tangier begins with a guided introduction to the city, offering an immersive overview of its unique blend of Mediterranean and Atlantic influences. Accompanied by a local guide, you explore key landmarks, winding streets and viewpoints that reveal Tangier’s layered history as a crossroads between Africa and Europe.

Your visit continues at the Tangier Archaeology Museum, housed within the former sultan’s palace. Here, you’ll discover a rich collection of artefacts that trace the region’s ancient past – from Phoenician and Roman periods to early Islamic history – offering a deeper understanding of the civilisations that have shaped northern Morocco.

In the evening, there will be a larger welcome dinner with the four other 51�� groups who will have been travelling around Morocco. Here you will meet the 51�� Discovery Tours experts who will immerse you in eclipses, astronomy and the cosmos via a series of talks over the next three days.

Day 3: Fascinating talks and pre-eclipse briefing

Today is dedicated to an enriching programme of morning and afternoon lectures, delivered in fully equipped function rooms designed to support an engaging learning environment. The talk programme will be announced nearer the event but will include engaging talks on astronomy, the cosmos and the latest findings covered in 51��, plus the essential pre-eclipse briefing, which will be a detailed presentation to ensure you are well prepared for the day’s event. This session will last around 1 hour, with plenty of time for questions at the end. Guests at our previous eclipse events have expressed how useful they found this briefing session, allowing them to make the most of the eclipse experience.

Scheduled coffee breaks throughout the day provide time to relax, reflect on the material and enjoy informal conversations with fellow participants. A midday lunch break offers another opportunity to recharge before the afternoon sessions continue.

In the evening, gather for a shared dining experience, a convivial setting in which to unwind, exchange ideas and discuss the insights gained over the course of the day.

Day 4: Eclipse day

After an early breakfast, set out on a scenic 45‑minute drive to our private eclipse‑viewing site in the Nador/Al Hoceima province of the Rif mountains. The remote rural landscape offers wide, open vistas and an ideal position close to the centre line of 100 per cent totality. On arrival, there is a 400 metre walk up a track to the site. You will have ample time to choose your preferred viewing spot among the gently undulating hills that stretch eastward with no visual obstructions.

Our exclusive-use rural restaurant will serve as your base for the morning, with drinks available on arrival. Chairs, refreshments and certified eclipse-viewing glasses will be provided throughout the event. Our astronomy experts, Stuart and Abigail, will be on hand to guide the experience, explain key moments and answer any questions as the celestial choreography unfolds.

The eclipse begins with first contact shortly after 8.40am, followed by totality just before 9.55am, lasting an impressive 4 minutes and 49 seconds. At the moment of totality, the sun will be positioned 38 degrees above the eastern horizon, offering superb viewing conditions.

After lunch is served at the viewing site, return to Tangier for further talks from Stuart and Abigail, and a full eclipse debrief, including a comparison with observations from our parallel group in Luxor, Egypt. As evening falls, the day concludes with a special dinner, concluding the Tangier leg of your adventure.

Day 5: Travel south to Fes

Journey from Tangier to Fes, crossing ever-changing landscapes that reveal the richness and diversity of northern Morocco. From coastal views to rolling hills and inland vistas, the route itself becomes part of the adventure, offering glimpses into the country’s vibrant character along the way.

Upon arriving in Fes, you settle into the Hotel Sahrai Fes hotel for two nights and enjoy a traditional pastilla for dinner, a signature Moroccan dish that beautifully blends sweet and savoury flavour – an ideal introduction to the city’s rich and storied culinary heritage.

Day 6: The cultural and artistic heritage of Fes

Your morning begins with a guided walk through the UNESCO‑listed Fes el‑Bali medina, navigating its labyrinth of narrow alleys, busy souks and centuries‑old workshops. Along the way, you visit key highlights including the exquisitely decorated Al-Attarine Madrasa, celebrated for its intricate zellij tilework and carved cedarwood, and the historic Funduk Nejjarine, a beautifully restored caravanserai that offers insight into the city’s long trading history.

In the afternoon, you take part in a specialist‑led Islamic geometric art workshop, gaining a deeper understanding of the mathematical principles, symbolism and meticulous craftsmanship that define one of the most iconic and enduring forms of Islamic art.

Day 7: Merzouga desert camp on the edge of the Sahara

Today you travel towards the vast expanse of the Sahara desert, watching as the landscapes gradually shift into rolling dunes and wide‑open desert horizons. Upon arrival at Golden Camp, you set out on a camel ride at sunset, experiencing the quiet, otherworldly beauty of the Sahara as the light drapes the sand in warm, shifting colours.

As night descends upon the dunes, you will settle in to your tented desert camp, where traditional Moroccan hospitality awaits. Here, you unwind beneath an immense, star‑filled sky – an unforgettable moment of stillness and wonder at the edge of the Sahara.

Day 8: Going deep into Ait Benhaddou and Ouarzazate

Today you venture deeper into Morocco’s cinematic landscapes, travelling toward the legendary Ait Benhaddou. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most impressive examples of traditional earthen architecture, its fortified ksar rising strikingly from the desert plain. As you explore its narrow alleys and ancient kasbahs, you can almost imagine the rhythm of life in this historic trading post along the old trans‑Saharan caravan routes.

After your visit, you pause for lunch at Tawesna, where you enjoy a relaxed, community‑run meal that highlights local flavours in a tranquil riverside setting.

In the afternoon, you continue on to Ouarzazate, the famed “Gateway to the Sahara,” known for its film studios and sweeping desert landscapes. Here, you settle in for dinner at the Hotel Le Berbere Palace.

Day 9: Gentle hiking and village life in the Atlas mountains

Today you travel into the serenity of the High Atlas mountains. Your journey winds through dramatic landscapes, where rugged peaks, terraced valleys and shifting colours reveal the geology and life of this remarkable region.

Upon reaching Ouirgane, you will set out on a gentle guided hike, an ideal opportunity to breathe in the crisp mountain air and take in sweeping views at an unhurried pace.

You will continue onwards to a nearby village, where you will gain insight into everyday life in the Atlas and meet members of the local community, welcoming you with a traditional Moroccan lunch.

In the late afternoon, you will check into the charming Domaine de la Roseraie, where you will also enjoy dinner in the peaceful surroundings.

Day 10: Explore Marrakech including the Medina

This morning you will travel to the vibrant city of Marrakech. Here you will immerse yourself with a guided exploration of its maze-like alleys, bustling souks and hidden courtyards that reveal the city’s rich history and daily rhythms, led by an expert local guide who will bring the city’s history, architecture and traditions to life. Your first stop is the legendary Djemaa el-Fna square, the vibrant heart of the medina, where storytellers, musicians and market vendors create an ever‑changing tapestry of sights and sounds.

You then continue to the exquisite Ben Youssef Medersa, one of Morocco’s most celebrated examples of Islamic architecture. Wander through its serene courtyard and marvel at intricate zellige tilework, carved cedarwood and the artistry that once inspired generations of students.

From here, admire the elegant Koutoubia Mosque, its magnificent 12th‑century minaret rising above the old city. Although entry is reserved for worshippers, your guide will share the fascinating history and influence of this iconic landmark. The day concludes with the Almoravid Koubba, one of the city’s oldest surviving monuments, offering a rare glimpse into Marrakech’s early architectural heritage.

After checkling into the Hotel 2Ciels for two nights and enjoying some free time, you will enjoy a relaxed dinner at the hotel.

Day 11: Jardin Majorelle, Berber Museum and farewell dinner

Today you will enjoy a tranquil change of pace at the enchanting Jardin Majorelle, a botanical haven of cobalt blues, exotic plants and cooling shade. Adjacent to the garden, the Yves Saint Laurent Museum offers an inspiring look into the designer’s life and his deep creative connection with Morocco. This is followed by a insightful visit to the Berber Museum that reveals heritage, craftsmanship, identity and enduring cultural traditions.

The afternoon is at leisure. You can explore the medina’s winding streets at your own pace or just relax and refect by the hotel pool. As evening falls, the day concludes with a farewell dinner, celebrating the remarkable tour you have undertaken together.

Day 12: Farewell to Marrakech

After breakfast, it is time to say farewell to Marrakech and conclude the journey. Group transfers will be provided from the hotel to Marrakech Airport, ensuring a smooth and timely departure for all participants.

Eclipse event experts

The talks and eclipse experience during the Tangier part of this tour will be led by astronomer Dr Stuart Clark and 51��’s Abigail Beall. Plus, there will be an additional talk from field archaeologist Dr Eve MacDonald.

Dr Stuart Clark

Stuart is an astronomy journalist who has devoted his career to presenting the complex world of astronomy to the general public. He holds a first class honours degree and a PhD in astrophysics, is a fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and a former vice chair of the Association of British Science Writers. In 2020, he was awarded a higher doctorate from the University of Hertfordshire for “services to astronomy and the public understanding of science”.

Stuart’s latest book is Beneath the Night: How the stars have shaped the history of humankind (Faber), and in his capacity as cosmology consultant, he writes articles for 51��. Through his company Expanded Universe Ltd., he consults for the European Space Agency, the UK Atomic Energy Authority’s Fusion Cluster and International Asteroid Day. He has written for, among others: BBC Sky at Night, BBC Science Focus, The Times, The Guardian, The Observer, The Economist, The Times Higher Education Supplement, Astronomy Now, Sky & Telescope and Astronomy.

Abigail Beall

Abigail is a writer and specials editor for 51��, where she also writes a monthly astronomy column. In 2019, Abigail wrote and published The Art of Urban Astronomy and has also co-written three popular science books for Dorling Kindersley.

In addition, Abigail is a physics, technology and environment journalist whose work has appeared in Wired, BBC Science Focus and BBC Future.

Dr Eve MacDonald

Eve is a Canadian-British ancient historian and field archaeologist. Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, she now lives in the UK. Her research and teaching focus on cultures both inside and outside of the traditional Greco-Roman worlds, at the fringes of the empire including on the archaeological legacy of 19th and 20th century colonial occupation in North Africa. She has taught courses on Carthaginian, Roman and Persian material culture and history at the University of Reading, University of Edinburgh and currently teaches at Cardiff University where she is senior lecturer in ancient history. She has published extensively on the history and material culture of Carthage, North Africa and the Middle East. In August 2025 she published Carthage: A new history (Ebury Press) and has written books on the archaeological history of Carthage (Bloomsbury, 2024) and Hannibal (Yale, 2015). Dr MacDonald will be accompanying the entire tour.

How to get there

The tour starts in Tangier and finishes in Marrakech. Both cities have international airports. Our partner Intrepid Travel will be happy to offer flight advice and book flights for those travelling from the UK.

Pace and physciality

The eclipse viewing site is in the “natural” gardens of a private traditional rural restaurant in the mountains. To reach the site, there is a 400 metre uphill walk along a track.

When exploring Morocco sites, a basic level of fitness and mobility is required to enjoy these visits, as they will include walking on uneven surfaces.

The itinerary will include some walking, occasionally on rough ground, in order to fully experience the historical sites and mountains. The walking will be at a gentle pace but will not be suitable for guests with mobility issues. Walking shoes with ankle support and sturdy soles are highly recommended.

While Morocco is a relatively liberal country, modesty still prevails. For a more comfortable experience, female guests should wear clothing that covers their shoulders, chest and legs. Headscarves are not expected or required of non-Muslim women in Morocco.

There is a call to prayer five times a day from the early morning. It is meant to be loud and is a key part of the city soundscape. If you’re a light sleeper, earplugs may be useful.

Transport

On some of the days, you will be travelling long distances by comfortable air-conditioned coach.

Weather

The daytime temperatures in northern Morocco in August can get up to around 29°C (84°F), so please make sure you wear a sun hat and suncream and bring lots of water. Drinks will be provided at a central area of the viewing site, but we suggest you have additional water with you throughout the eclipse day.

Total solar eclipse viewing

A total solar eclipse is one of nature’s most extraordinary spectacles, but it is also a natural phenomenon that can never be guaranteed. While every effort has been made to position the group in the best possible location based on historical weather patterns and eclipse predictions, cloud cover and local weather conditions are beyond anyone’s control. Even if the Sun is partially obscured, the dramatic changes in light, temperature and the surrounding environment can still make for a remarkable experience. Our itinerary has been carefully designed to maximise the chances of witnessing totality, while also ensuring a rewarding and enriching journey regardless of the weather on eclipse day.

Journey through western Turkey to explore the deep archaeological history of Anatolia, where some of the earliest complex societies in the Mediterranean emerged. From the multi-layered remains of Troy to the remarkably preserved streets of Ephesus, trace how settlement, urban life and technology evolved from prehistory through the Bronze Age and into the classical world.

The tour focuses on the long development of human society in Anatolia, where some of the earliest complex settlements and urban centres emerged. Key sites include Troy, where layered occupation reveals millennia of rebuilding and destruction, and Ephesus, one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world. Additional visits to sites such as Pergamon and Aphrodisias as well as key coastal and inland archaeological landscapes provide insight into Hellenistic, Roman and earlier Anatolian cultures, illustrating how geography, trade and empire shaped civilisation over time.

You will be accompanied by a specialist archaeologist with extensive field experience in Anatolia and the wider eastern Mediterranean. They will provide on-site interpretation of architecture and artefacts, helping to connect visible remains with broader historical and cultural narratives. Their commentary bridges academic research and accessible storytelling, bringing each site into clearer focus.

This trip is designed for curious travellers with a passion for archaeology, ancient history and the origins of early civilisations. It is ideal for those who enjoy exploring sites on foot, standing among real excavations and seeing how everyday objects, ruins and landscapes are used to reconstruct lost worlds. Itinerary

Day 1: Arrive in Istanbul and meet the group

Merhaba! Welcome to Turkey. Check in to the Legacy Ottoman Hotel, located in the heart of Istanbul, the continent-straddling metropolis that the Ancient Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans have previously all called home.

In the evening, meet your fellow guests, tour leader and accompanying expert, who will give an introductory lecture on the tour ahead. The tour expert will give both evening lectures and walking commentary throughout the tour.

Afterwards, you will head out to enjoy dinner together.

Day 2: Istanbul to Gallipoli Peninsula and on to Çanakkale

Travel north to the Gallipoli Peninsula, where the landscape preserves an extraordinary archaeological record spanning thousands of years. While Gallipoli is best known for the First World War campaign of 1915, its archaeology reveals a far richer story. Across the peninsula, surviving trench systems, fortifications, shell craters and recovered military artefacts provide a remarkable case study in battlefield archaeology, allowing researchers to reconstruct both the experience of conflict and the rapid transformation of the landscape during the modern era.

The peninsula also occupies a pivotal position within the Dardanelles, the narrow waterway linking the Aegean and Black Seas. This strategic corridor has shaped patterns of migration, trade and warfare since prehistory, making it one of the most significant crossroads of the ancient world. From Bronze Age communities to the great empires of antiquity and beyond, control of these waters has repeatedly influenced the course of history.

Continue to Çanakkale, your base for exploring the legendary city of Troy. This evening, enjoy an talk from your expert, who will introduce the archaeology of Troy.

Day 3: Troy and Pergamon

Spend the morning exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Troy, where the mound of Hisarlık preserves more than 4,000 years of settlement. Successive cities were built one atop another, creating an extraordinary archaeological sequence that has transformed our understanding of Bronze Age societies, trade networks and conflict. As you explore the site’s fortifications, gateways and domestic remains, discover how decades of excavation have disentangled the evidence behind one of history’s most enduring legends.

Continue to Pergamon, one of the great cities of the Hellenistic world. Explore its spectacular hilltop Acropolis, where the dramatic setting enhances impressive monuments including the steep theatre, the Temple of Trajan and the remains of the celebrated Library of Pergamon. Together, they illustrate the city’s remarkable achievements in architecture, urban planning and scholarship.

Later, travel to Selçuk for your overnight stay.

Day 4: Full day at Ephesus

Continue south through the Aegean landscape to Ephesus, one of the best-preserved classical cities in the Mediterranean. Its marble-paved streets, colonnaded avenues and monumental public buildings reveal the sophistication of Roman urban planning and the wealth generated by its position on major Mediterranean trade routes.

Explore highlights including the iconic Library of Celsus, the vast Great Theatre and the richly decorated Terrace Houses, where mosaics and frescoes offer a rare glimpse into domestic life. Together, these remarkable remains provide an exceptional archaeological record of one of the Roman world’s greatest cities.

Day 5: Pamukkale and Hierapolis

After breakfast, travel to Pamukkale, where mineral-rich thermal waters have sculpted the striking white travertine terraces for which the site is renowned. Above them lies the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hierapolis, an ancient spa city whose baths, temples and extensive necropolis illustrate how communities harnessed this remarkable geothermal landscape for both ritual and everyday life. Explore how natural processes and human activity combined to create a unique cultural landscape before enjoying the remainder of the day at leisure.

Day 6: Fly to Istanbul. Afternoon city tour including the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia and the Hippodrome

This morning, you may choose to join an optional sunrise hot air balloon flight over Pamukkale, offering spectacular aerial views of the dazzling white travertine terraces and the ancient city of Hierapolis.

Later, transfer for your flight to Istanbul. On arrival, explore the heart of the Old City, where layers of Byzantine and Ottoman history converge. Visit the magnificent Blue Mosque, the 1,500-year-old Hagia Sophia, commissioned by Emperor Justinian I, and the Hippodrome, once the centre of Byzantine civic life and chariot racing. There is also time to browse the atmospheric Grand Bazaar, one of the world’s oldest covered markets, with thousands of shops lining its historic lanes.

This evening, gather with your fellow travellers for a special farewell dinner to celebrate your archaeological journey through Türkiye.

Day 7: Depart Istanbul

After breakfast, you will be transferred back to the airport for your return flight. You can also combine this tour with our Human origins, Neolithic and Bronze Age Turkey travelling through western Turkey departing in September 2027.

How to get there

The tour begins and ends in Istanbul. Please speak to Intrepid Travel who can offer flight advice and book flights for those travelling from the UK.

Pace and physicality

This tour is moderately paced and involves regular walking at archaeological sites, often across uneven ground, ancient paving stones, gravel paths and exposed terrain. Many sites, including Pergamon and Ephesus, include slopes, steps and extended periods on foot, with some days involving several hours of site exploration broken up by rest stops and commentary.

At sites such as Pergamon, you should expect steep inclines and stairways as the acropolis is built across a dramatic hillside. Ephesus features long marble streets that can be slippery and uneven underfoot, while Troy and Gallipoli involve walking across open archaeological and historical landscapes.

Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and a reasonable level of mobility are recommended.

Solo travellers

All of our tours, cruises, expeditions and weekenders are perfect for solo travellers. If you want your own room, you will need to pay a solo supplement of £590. However, if you are happy to share a room with a fellow guest of the same sex, we will do all we can to match you with another guest so you do not have to pay the solo room supplement.
